Goblin Valley – 50K
So Ellen is climbing perfect limestone in France & Spain and our friend Alex is climbing incredible sandstone in Kentucky. Meanwhile, Alex’s wife Magali, who can’t climb because of recent elbow surgery, has been training to run a 50K in Goblin Valley, Utah, and I’m sitting at home recovering from MY recent elbow surgery. Mag needs a support crew for her big race, and I get recruited at the last minute. Now running a 50K is something – that’s for sure… but being Support – now that is something else – looking after the dogs during the race, picking up dropped items along the way (jackets, gloves, etc), trying to ensure the runner makes it to the start of the race on time (I failed here…) and just in general shouting words of encouragement as Mag runs by smiling. I’d never been to Goblin valley – it was beautiful – check out the photos to see why it’s called Goblin Valley. Pretty cool.
Rumple is handsome
just TRY to tell him he’s not
Hiking in Park City
Mag, Alex and I headed to Park City on this beautiful fall day. Alex went mountain BIKing, Mag went running, and I took Rumple and Millie for a 10 mile hike. It very well could have been THE best day of the fall weather-wise.
Mr & Mrs Young Visit
Yes, I’m over 40 years old… and yes, I still call Mr. & Mrs. Young — “Mr. & Mrs. Young” — much to the dismay of Mr. & Mrs. Young.
Good family friends of ours, the Youngs were on a road trip and came through SLC for a quick visit. We hadn’t seen them since our wedding over 13 years ago, and it was such a bummer that Ellen was away in Europe. We chatted, went out for a great meal, talked photography, and even had a quick tour of Black Diamond. The Youngs are awesome and it was great to catch up – hopefully it won’t be another 13 years until we connect again.
Not Happy
About two weeks ago we had the perfect storm of vehicle tires. We needed new tires on Ellen’s car, my car, and the van. Ouch. Regardless, it had to happen. So I throw down and get some good all-seasons. A day or so afterwards, I notice that there is a bit of a wobble… so I take it back, and they re-balance. All is good. A few days after that, I notice that there is still a bit of a wobble – I’m choked – it’s a total pain to keep taking the car in. I wait a day or so, and then on the way to work decide – ok – i gotta take this in again. But I
New Website is Live
As you can probably tell, the new kolin-and-ellen.com website is live.
For a few technical reasons I had to revamp the website – Hopefully the 5 people out in the world that look at it enjoy it. The old website and all of its content can still be found by clicking the link on the bottom of this page.
I realize that a lot of the links aren’t set up yet, things are broken and whacky – please bear with me as I try to get everything working. Thanks.
Rumple and I on Lone Peak
Seeing as Ellen is in France, and I’m injured (again) – I decided to take Rumple for a hike, and an overnight camping trip up to Lone Peak.
We left in the afternoon, and found wet snow on the ridge – so decided to find high ground and set up camp.
Rumple thinks he’s tough but isn’t. He was ‘guarding’ our camp, and all of a sudden would let out some barks – pretty much scaring himself. And then when it was time for bed – Rumple in the tent is hilarious – he starts off fine, and then decides that he wants to crawl inside your sleeping bag with you – sooo funny.

Lone Peak
Seeing as Ellen is climbing in France, I’m injured, and it’s a beautiful weekend, I decided to take Rumple up to Lone Peak for a hike and some camping
Here he is panting like a fool on a rest break.
This, posted from my iPhone while on the trail to see how the mobile uploading worked.
The BD Apparel team hike Grandeur
The team of designers for Black Diamond’s new apparel line were in SLC for the week – so I took the whole crew for a morning hike up Grandeur – starting from Millcreek. And when we arrived at the summit, there was a small note from Metcalf wishing us all a good morning – of course he had already summited from the West Face, was down and at work already. Classic.
