June 27th, 2012 | Comments Off on Rumple’s Allergies

Rumple has been scratching on and off for the last few years, usually worse in the summer.  Sometimes he gets a pretty bad rash on his belly.  We tried switching his food, giving him baths, all kinds of stuff.  Finally it was time to get him tested for allergies.  So we took him to the dermatology clinic for pets (who knew?), the shaved a patch on his side, and pricked him with 67 little needles to determine what he was allergic to.  And now we have to inject him every week for several months in order to “desensitize” him.

There was nothing that he was majorly allergic to, just a bunch of things that he was a little allergic to (grasses, trees, etc, etc).  So we’ll see how it goes.

June 23rd, 2012 | Comments Off on Independence Pass

Ellen was climbing in Rifle for a few weeks, I headed to Aspen to participate in a three day ‘photo camp’.  After that was over we spent a day in the area and did a great hike right at Independence Pass.  Rumple had a blast swimming in lakes at ~12,000ft.

June 19th, 2012 | Comments Off on Photo Camp

Seeing as I’m injured and can’t really do anything, I decided to sign up for a three day photo camp in Aspen Colorado – put on by Rock & Ice Magazine.  Ellen was already climbing in Colorado so I flew to Aspen, she picked me up and I attended the camp.  It was super fun and very informative.  I’ll post a gallery of my favorite shots later.

June 18th, 2012 | Comments Off on Black Streaks Attempt with Schildroth

We were worried it was going to be wet, and it was.  The extra bummer is the gate was closed so we had to approach from further down the road, adding about an extra hour to our approach and subsequent bail.  But it was still fun to hang with Erik, and check out his new super=bling-not-really-his-style truck.

June 16th, 2012 | Comments Off on S. Ridge of Superior with Metcalf & Perky

Metcalf and I have been trying to do the S. Ridge together but our schedules never aligned.  Yesterday he said, “KP, let’s do the south ridge this weekend”.  I said, “OK”.  He said, “I can’t on Sunday, I need to work on Saturday, so let’s make it 5 or 5:30am LATEST at the parking.”  Yikes.

So that’s what we did, and Perky came along as well.  What a great way to start the day.

June 11th, 2012 | Comments Off on S. Ridge of Superior – with Naoe

Naoe Sakashita is a certified badass.  First ascent of the N. Ridge of K2 in 1982, first solo ascent of Amadablam, a first ascent on Amadablam, and all kinds of other stuff that I will never do.  He’s been the Japanese distributor for BD, and Chouinard gear before that for close to 30 years as well.

Every time Naoe is in the neighborhood, we get out to try to do something.  At 65 years old, he’s a machine – and on this trip proved it even more.  Straight from sea level in Japan and directly off the plane – we headed to the S. Ridge of Superior for a fun, after work, 2400ft gain hike/scramble/solo to over 10,000ft.  And when he had a bit of a headache from the altitude – he just started karate chopping the back of his head to make it go away.  Yup – Naoe is a bad man.

Still unable to climb, I headed to Little Cottonwood Canyon with a fun crew of BD folks to spend the day hanging from a rope shooting photos. Super fun.

June 3rd, 2012 | Comments Off on Lone Peak

Ellen and I and Rumple head up to Lone Peak for a weekend.  This is the earliest we’d ever gone up – and Rumple had never been there before.  It’s a fairly brutal hike, but then the camping and climbing are super fun.  There was quite a bit of snow, but we managed to find the only dry spot big enough for our tent.  It was a super enjoyable weekend in the alpine – just outside our door (literally) Read the rest of this entry »
