About two weeks before we headed to France I had dinner with my buddy Jon Webb and his amazing girlfriend Krissy.  I mentioned that Ellen and I were headed to France, and it just so happens that they were too – also to Chamonix.  The big difference is that Krissy was going there to run the UTMB.  A 100 mile race AROUND Mt. Blanc (that she has won before and currently holds the women’s course record for).  Yowsa.

Finally made it to Chamonix.  We had decided to get a ‘valley pass’ for 6 days worth of telepheriques, trams and lifts in the valley.  The weather started off not-sweet so we immediately blasted for a short non-committing route – the Traverse of Les Crochues – basically a ridge scramble with one short pitch of 5.5 which we soloed.  This was on the ‘opposite’ side of the big hills – in an area called Augilles Rouges. So fun.

And we ended up bumping into a guy we know from SLC on the descent – Tim Kemple, who was there shooting photos for the North Face.  Small world.

Vincent (the guy I was working with at the lab) and his wife, Sandrine (the woman Ellen did the via ferrata with) took us out to this great dinner at a castle overlooking all of Grenoble.  It was awesome.

While I was slaving away at a certification laboratory in Grenoble, Ellen headed out and did a via ferrata with a friend we know.  It was super fun and ended at a place where paragliders launch from.  I’m thinking Ellen had a more fun day than I did.

At pretty close to the last minute, I ended up having to head to Grenoble, France for work.  Seeing as Ellen was still “inbetween jobs” we decided to make a bit of a vacation out of it.  We would head to Grenoble where I would work, and Ellen could be a tourist – then when that was done we would go to Chamonix for 10 days and get some climbing in. After the fun filled two weeks, the plan was that I would head back to work, while Ellen would take a train to southern France for another 2 weeks or so, and go sport climbing with our friends Howard, Kate & Tobin.  A genius plan.

In early August, Metcalf, Jack Tackle and I took the Chairman of the Board of Black Diamond Inc up the Grand Teton.  He’d never really climbed before and truly did an amazing job.  We had unbelievably perfect weather, camped at the saddle, summited by 8:30am – and all-in-all just had a total blast.
