February 2003 Comp - Train for Pain

the report

January Climbing Comp

Well the January Comp was a huge success - a special thanks goes to Ellen and Jeff Baldwin for setting some wicked good problems - they spent quite a bit of time setting 19 problems, and they were super fun and super good. And an extra special thanks to Ellen for the chocolate chip cookies and fancy marble cake.

Sorry, the video cam is on the fritz so no video on the website for this comp.

The results are very tricky to decipher - everyone was climbing super well.

Marc tore it up early then had to leave
Greg was a send machine with the whole family cheering him on.
Tom Adams was a climbing fool - not using half the holds and doing none of the problems as intended
Neal was stupid strong as usual
I was my typical bumbly self but was psyched to send the campus problem
Gwen was more focused on schoolwork so only managed to pull off a few problems before the guilt got the best of her and she had to leave
Doug hung in strong, trying problems many times and always pulling it off
Special Guest Howie gets the award for most sends in the shortest amount of time - the dude can crank... FAST
Heath - unassumingly was sending and mostly flashing everything in site
Late comers Bill and Paul were still pulling hard after a 5 hour workout at the Front....

It was a ridiculously close comp - with the possibility of absolutely anyone coming out on top - but after putting all the factors into the fancy computer - analyzing the weather patterns over the last month and taking into account height, age, hairstyle, types of shoes worn and what the competitor had for breakfast - when the smoke cleared - by a small margin the victory goes to.....

Evil Tom Adams.

Nate has shown interest in setting for the next comp so if Tom is available - tom and Nate will set some sicko problems for sure. Next comp - to be known as the Train for Pain Olympics - will be held in February - we'll keep you posted.

December Climbing Comp

The second competition in the Train for Pain Climbing Series took place on Thursday Dec. 13th at the Powick's. An incredible turn-out with top notch problems proved to make for a fun and exciting evening. Marc Hammarlund and Greg Parker, the problem setters, decided on the format which entailed doing as many problems as you could - scoring was cumulative with the total number of 'flashes' being worked in to a bonus score. Final point scores were adjusted based on the competitors best outdoor boulder problem using some PHd level math, scatter graphs, and curve fits. When the smoke cleared - Ellen took first, with Danielle in 2nd and Doug Oliver in 3rd.

Next Comp will be held in January - stay tuned.

Climbing Comp

The first in a series of winter climbing competitions was held at the Powick's. The Train for Pain Climbing Comp series will be held monthly - with a different format each month. This month Kolin & Ellen set approx 40 problems of all grades - everyone was invited to do as many problems as they wished with their top six problems counting for the final score. All final scores were scaled using a factor based on lifetime hardest redpoint in order to level the playing field.

Marc Hammarlund took top honors and will set for the next comp to be held in December.
